This page describes the use of hints in flashcards. A hint is a valuable tool you can use to make your question have a unique answer. Hints are a useful alternative to true/false flashcards.

NEW: If you use a "partial-word hint," do not use letters at both the beginning and end of the blank. Use letters at either the beginning or the end.

Wrong:
Q: A fungating sore is a variety of g_______g chancroid.
A: granulating

Right:
Q: A fungating sore is a variety of g_______ chancroid.
A: granulating

Also, don't use too many letters. If you have to use too many letters to make a hint, you need to change the flashcard. Example:

Q: The common causes of gloss_______ include viral infections, mechanical irritation by coarse objects, chemical irritation, and allergic reactions.
A: glossitis

Since "glossitis" means an inflamed tongue (which you would know if you had the original book in front of you), you can rewrite it this way, thus working a hint into the actual content of the sentence:

Q: The common causes of an inflamed tongue, known as _______, include viral infections, mechanical irritation by coarse objects, chemical irritation, and allergic reactions.
A: glossitis

Contrasts.
These are no longer allowed. Examples are above/below, larger/smaller, lesser/greater, and more/less. Do not write any flashcards like these:

Q: Acetylcholine may _______ (trigger/delay) the release of pulmonary secretions.
A: trigger

Q: Morphologically, do the lesions formed from smooth nodules appear above or below the skin's surface?
A: Above the skin's surface.

Q: Are the lesions that form from smooth nodules raised or flat in appearance?
A: They are raised.

Q: Do the lesions that initially form as a result of discoid lupus erythematosus appear to be vaguely defined or well-defined?
A: Well-defined.

Q: Are the nodules from lymphocytoma cutis firm or soft in consistency?
A: Firm in consistency.

Q: Is lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei considered to be an acute, subacute, or chronic type of dermatosis?
A: A chronic type of dermatosis.

More than one quality.
If something comes in more than one quality, set the question up so that all the qualities but one are listed in the question. This leaves it so the answer will be the last quality. For example if something has two colors:

Q: In addition to yellowish-brown, what color may the nodules from lymphocytoma cutis be?
A: Reddish-blue.

For a concept in medicine still in debate:
Q: Some contend that lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei is not a tuberculid, but instead is an extreme form of _______.
A: granulomatous rosacea

Partial Word Hints.
Use part of the word in the question, and leave the other part as blank. Make sure to write the whole word in the answer:

Q: The borders of syphilitic chancres are firm and in_______.
A: indurated

Q: A d_______ examination uses a special microscope to reflect light off the sides and surfaces of an object, allowing fine structures to become visible.
A: dark field

Q: A fungating sore is a variety of g_______ chancroid.
A: granulating

Q: A fungating sore is a variety of granulating ch_______.
A: chancroid

Q: A f_______ sore is a variety of granulating chancroid.
A: fungating

Q: Which word starts with "pu" and is defined as the rhythmic beating in the arteries caused by the contractions of the heart?
A: Pulse.

Q: Which word starts with "ca" and is defined as the large arteries in the neck that carry blood to the head?
A: Carotid.

Q: Which word starts with "mu" and is defined as a blowing or rasping sound heard while listening to the heart?
A: Murmur.

Q: With regards to biology, the term i_______ describes an abnormal substance that permeates and accumulates gradually in cells or body tissues.
A: infiltrate

Drug names.
Drugs often do the same thing as one another (generally speaking), so it can seem difficult to make questions with unique answers for drugs. But drugs also have long names, and that makes it easier to make partial word hints:

Q: An al_______ is a nitrogenous organic molecule found in plants that often has a pharmacological effect on humans.
A: alkaloid

Q: Ant_______ is an artificial alkaloid that is believed to be effective in reducing fever.
A: Antipyrine

Q: Ph_______ is an organic compound used as a laxative and as an acid-base indicator for solutions made up of weak acids and strong bases.
A: Phenolphthalein

Q: Pyr_______ is a crystalline organic compound that has a penetrating odor and is the parent substance of various biologically important derivatives.
A: Pyrimidine

Reworking existing questions.
Here are some example of how true/false can be converted to different question forms:

Problem question one:
Q: True or false: Zafirlukast is a corticosteroid.
A: False.

Problem question two:
Q: True or false: Zafirlukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist.
A: True.

For a solution, combine problem question one and two:
Q: Is Zafirlukast a leukotriene receptor antagonist or a corticosteroid?
A: A leukotriene receptor antagonist.

Problem question one:
Q: True or false: Nedocromil is an inflammatory cell stabilizer.
A: True.

Problem question two:
Q: True or false: Dexamethasone is an inflammatory cell stabilizer.
A: False.

For a solution, combine problem question one and two:
Q: Which of these is an inflammatory cell stabilizer: Dexamethasone or Nedocromil?
A: Nedocromil.

Problem:
Q: True or false: Bronchoconstriction results from the effects of acetylcholine released within the bronchial walls.
A: True.

Solution:
Q: Ac_______ released within the bronchial walls results in bronchoconstriction.
A: Acetylcholine

Problem:
Q: True or false: Inflammation is one of the most common processes that result in bronchial obstruction.
A: True.

Solution:
Q: In_______ is one of the most common processes that result in bronchial obstruction.
A: Inflammation

Problem:
Q: True or false: Bronchoconstriction is one of the most common processes that result in bronchial obstruction.
A: True.
